Media Release: Cigna Delighted To Sponsor Disabled Sportsperson Of The Year Category At Sports Awards

Fresh from committing to supporting the iconic Wellington Round the Bays event for another two years until 2018, leading insurance provider Cigna has become category sponsor of the Disabled Sportsperson of the Year award at the prestigious Sport Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards.

The Awards will host 650 guests and be held at the TSB Arena on Wednesday 15 June, recognising excellence and achievement across the greater Wellington sports sector.

Established in 1969 and now in their 47th year, the Sports Awards feature 12 categories ranging from volunteer to coaching to Sports Man and Woman, with the evening culminating in the supreme Sportsperson award. Sport Wellington delivers the event each year as part of their vision for everyone in the Wellington region to have a lifelong involvement in sport and active recreation.

Wellington-based Cigna has a track record of supporting athletes with disabilities through its official charity partnership with Achilles International New Zealand. Achilles provides New Zealanders with disabilities the opportunity to participate alongside able-bodied athletes in local mainstream events like Cigna Round the Bays, and the Wellington Marathon as well as the high-profile international New York Marathon.

“When Sport Wellington approached us to sponsor the Disabled Category it was a very easy decision to make ” says Cigna CEO, Lance Walker. “We’re passionate about helping to bring sport and fitness opportunities to the community, and through Achilles, we’re already providing support and opportunities for disabled athletes.”

Sport Wellington CEO Phil Gibbons says that “The partnership with Cigna continues to grow and we are grateful to them for expanding their support of Sport Wellington by sponsoring this key category at this great event. The Awards is a wonderful showcase of Wellington athletes and coaches and officials, and for the finalists and the winners, it is a memorable night.”

Sport Wellington has organised the showpiece event since 1999 with the Awards regarded nationally for their presentation and flair. For more details go to:
