17 Oct 2021

On 18 October 2021 we released a number of enhancements to definitions and benefits across our Assurance Extra, Business Assurance, Business Extra and Agribusiness Extra Covers.

We’ve highlighted the key enhancements below. For more information please see our October 2021 Enhancements brochure.

Improvements to our medical definitions

These enhancements apply to Assurance Extra, Business Assurance, Business Extra and Agribusiness Extra policy holders*

The definition has been updated so it’s more relevant to the current medical practice of confirming a patient is in a comatose state by basing it on a documented Glasgow Coma Scale of 6 or less for at least 3 days in a row. This means going forward, a customer who is in a comatose state is more likely to be eligible for a claim.

Cerebral aneurysm

We’ve introduced a new condition under the Partial Benefit on Assurance Extra and Business Assurance Trauma Cover. This means customers will now be covered under a partial benefit when undergoing certain surgical treatment for a cerebral aneurysm.

Organ Transplants

Recognising the severity of undergoing a partial liver transplant, we’ve updated the definition to include coverage for partial liver transplants. This means customers will now have the comfort of knowing they'll have the financial support required if they were able to undergo treatment earlier for a partial liver transplant, instead of waiting until a suitable whole liver is available to them.

Improvements to our products

These enhancements apply to Assurance Extra and Business Assurance policy holders*

  • If customers qualify for a Severe Illness Benefit on Assurance Extra, and are subsequently eligible for a Total Disability Benefit or Partial Disability Benefit, we’ll no longer reduce their payment term by 6 months, which means that going forward customers will receive their monthly benefit for their full payment term or until they’re no longer disabled.

  • We’ve extended coverage under the Children’s Bereavement Support Benefit on Assurance Extra to provide a reimbursement of funeral costs up to a maximum of $5,000 if a life assured’s biological child dies during the third trimester, prior to birth.

  • We’ve enhanced and simplified the Optional Guaranteed Insurability on Business Assurance Life Cover, Trauma Cover and Complete Disablement Cover.

  • Recognising the impact COVID-19 has had on our customers, we’ve extended the maximum suspension of cover period to 6 months on our Assurance Extra product to provide extra flexibility for customers experiencing significant financial difficulties.

It’s our priority to support you and our customers with quality product solutions that will meet New Zealanders needs not only now but in the long term. We’ll continue to make enhancements as our customers’ needs change and in line with market developments.

*The enhancements came into effect on 18 October 2021 and apply to events that occur on or after that date. They do not apply if the relevant illness, injury or condition showed signs or symptoms, or was diagnosed before this date.

The product enhancements apply to relevant covers and options for Cigna Assurance Extra and Business Assurance policies issued on or after 1 May 2004 subject to the terms and conditions of your applicable Policy Enhancement Benefit.

The product enhancements also apply to the relevant covers and options for Agribusiness Extra and Business Extra policies regardless of the date your policy was issued.
